Turkmenistan

In Turkmenistan we are investigating the slip rate and the earthquake history of the Main Kopet Dagh Fault. The country’s capital Ashgabat has been devastated by a strong earthquake in 1948, but apart from this, very little is known about previous major seismic events. We use tectonic geomorphology and paleoseismology to investigate the spectacular fault trace and to determine the fault’s seismic history. The results will also help to shed light on the overall motion of the South Caspian Basin. A first paper is currently under review.
